The Great Alaska Shake Out:
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake, a special “Great Alaska ShakeOut” earthquake drill will be held at 1:36 p.m. on March 27, 2014.

5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27 Join us as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake. State and local officials join community leaders to recall the devastation wrought by the earthquake and share stories of Alaskans' resilience and survival. A lecture follows at 6 p.m. about the effects of the earthquake by Peter Haeussler, Research Geologist and Alaska Coordinator for Earthquake Hazards, U.S. Geological Survey. Free. Event flyer

Earthquake: Stories from Sitkans who experienced the Great Alaska Earthquake and Tsunami around Alaska:
Sitka Historical Society and the Sitka Maritime Heritage Society present "Earthquake: Stories from Sitkans who experienced the Great Alaska Earthquake and Tsunami around Alaska.” The program begins at 6:30, Thursday, March 27th at Harrigan Centennial Hall. We have some dramatic first-hand stories from Prince William Sound and Anchorage, as well as what really happened in Sitka, and a short slide show overview. Valdez Museum - 50th Anniversary of the '64 Quake:
  • The Valdez Museum will be open free to the public at both locations. The Valdez Museum on Egan will be open from 12noon-9pm, while the Valdez Museum on Hazelet will be open from 12noon-5pm.
  • From 5:30-6pm the Pioneers of Alaska will meet on Kelsey Dock for their Annual Memorial Service, and they invite you to join them.
  • Stating at 6pm the city will be funding a public reception that will take place at the Valdez Museum. At this time the Museum will also unveil the new earthquake exhibit, “A Moving Experience”.
Tsunami Live Code Test">Tsunami Live Code Test :

The State of Alaska, NWS, and The National Tsunami Warning Center are conducting a Test of the State's Tsunami Warning System approximately at 10:15 AM on March 27, 2014.

NOAA, is asking that the Harbormasters and Emergency Managers to help spread the word about the Test in the harbors, schools, and communities. Also, please help us out by taking a short survey after the test. The Survey can be found at: The test is best explained here:

Riskland: Remembering the 1964 Earthquake - Anchorage Museum: April 18 - September 14, 2014
To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Good Friday earthquake, this exhibition looks at this devastating event, the reconstruction efforts that followed, and our earthquake preparedness today. Highlights include videos chronicling earthquake survivors’ personal accounts of the disaster. The exhibition also includes hands-on activities and historical photographs and artifacts from the Anchorage Museum collection.
